Book Review & Giveaway: Higher Is Waiting

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Review Wire Media for Penguin Random House. I received information to facilitate my review as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

I've had a hard time getting into books lately. The past few books I've tried to read haven't really captured my attention the way I would've liked. When it comes to reading, I'm either all in or nothing. If I don't feel like I can't put the book down then I'm out .  Lately that hasn't been the case which is a bummer since a lot of the recent books I've tried reading, I had been really excited about.

Thankfully, that wasn't the case with my last book, Higher Is Waiting, by Tyler Perry.  To say that I read this at the perfect timing would be an understatement.  But, to be fair, most of the books that I feel that way about turn out to be those special tomes that you can pick up at any time in life and it will always be relateable.  I dare anyone not to take away a handful of lessons that they could apply to their life right away with Higher.

Perry discusses his abusive family past and how, even at a young age, he learned to let his faith guide him.  He talks about how his mother, a major "root" person in his life planted the seeds of faith and even as he grew older and there were times of struggle and disappointments, his faith remained strong.  On the contrary, he talked about embracingdisappointments and more importantly, seeking the value and lessons that each setback comes with.  There were some parts of the book (like the one I just mentioned) that I felt were a big slap to my face- in a good way.  The truths that we tend to ignore.  The personal responsibilities that we are not facing.  If you are not ready to confront yourself, do not read this book.  This book will have you examining your life and leave you with a  much higher self-awareness.

A major theme in the book that he discusses and is easily relateable is that of trees.  He goes into detail to discuss the different types of people that will come into your life; leaves, branches and roots.  They are each there to serve a purpose- sometimes a self-serving one- but they are not created equal.  Our job is to determine who is who and to not only nourish the important relationships in our lives but to not let the bad ones leave us bitter and resentful.

Higher Is Waiting is full of pearls of wisdom for any stage in your life but the most important one is that of self worth.  This is another theme in the book and Perry does a great job of explaining incidents in his life where he questioned his self-worth.  Because of his faith in God and ability to push through, he was able to achieve much higher than his childhood dictated.

What things could you achieve and what setbacks could you push through if you knew you were capable of going higher?
